WHY KIDNEY DISEASE MATTERS

An Overlooked but Growing Health Challenge

It should be that the causes of death by kidney disease is very close to the 4 NCDs and is also very expensive to management. Therefore, healthcare professional should not ignore kidney disease. The average cost per dialysis session may be approximately US $200 and the total annual cost approximately US $ 35,000 per patient. Therefore, we have to start paying more attention to kidney disease. Diabetes and hypertension accounts for 60-70 % of the kidney diseases cases. Since our diet in the Caribbean is high in sugar and salt, we must start to manage our consumption of foods which are high in these two minerals.
